Аудио к заданию:
− And this evening on the news we talked to Simon Levy, an ecology expert. Mr Levy, what are the most crucial ecological problems from your point of view?
− There are many problems: global warming, acid rain, ozone layer depletion, pollution etc. All of them are very important. We have to solve them as soon as possible, if we want to survive on Earth.
− Are things in the countryside as bad as in towns and cities?
− Unfortunately, yes, polluted air, rivers and lakes, poisonous chemicals in the fields. People are used to littering on the roadsides and in the forests.
− I’ve read your article about forests. You write that forests are disappearing very quickly and that it is harmful for people.
− The problem is that now people are cutting down the forests very aggressively. They need land for growing crops and building their houses. They need wood for making furniture and other things. They use wood as fuel, too.
− But people are used to cutting down trees for their needs, they’ve always done it.
− Yes, but not as much as now. Thirty−five years ago forests covered a quarter of the Earth’s land area. Today they cover only a sixth. Scientists think that by 2020 they will cover only a seventh of the land which is not good at all because trees produce oxygen for us.
− But new trees are planted regularly.
− Planting new trees is a good thing but it takes many years for a tree to grow.
− And in which regions are the problems with forests especially alarming?
− In Central and South America, Central Africa and South-East Asia. The tropical rainforests are in particular danger. They’re being cut down very fast. Many species of animals and plants may lose their home and disappear.
− A sad picture! Is there any way out?
− Of course, there is.
